The future of the polytechnic in India is very good. Diploma holders after completion of diploma can work in government and private companies. They can also study BE / BTech or AMIE after completion of a three years diploma. Candidates after completion of a three year polytechnic, are admitted to the second year of the BE or B.Tech course through lateral entry. There are a lot of  job opportunities for the diploma holders in Indian Railways, State Electricity Board/Department, BHEL, NTPC etc.

In my observation, I have found that polytechnic students have higher edge in practical areas of repair and maintenance, compared to the higher studies theoretical inputs gained through regular four year engineering course.

There is an advantage to a polytechnic student that he/she can also go for engineering degree.
Polytechnic students might not earn fabulous salaries as compared to four year engineering Graduates, but they would not go hungry.
